Networking in the North East is still one of the best ways to grow your business, build trust, and find collaborators, even if you’re tired of the usual events.

Why Networking’s Still Your Secret Weapon in the North East (Even if You’re Sick of Name Badges)

Let’s be honest. The word “networking” alone makes some people shudder. You picture limp sandwiches, awkward small talk, and someone trying to sell you life insurance. But up here in the North East, there’s more to it – and done right, it’s one of the best ways to get things moving for your business.

Here’s the truth. Whether you’re working from a spare bedroom in Seaham, got a small studio on Newcastle’s Quayside, or you’re running a family business in Durham, the fastest way to find out how things actually work is to get out and talk to real people. Nobody does business alone, and the North East’s tight networks mean word-of-mouth still matters. A lot.

Meeting People Who Get It

When we first started getting out and about, I half expected to be shunned by the “big boys” or to feel like an outsider. Couldn’t have been more wrong. Even as a small agency, we bumped into video producers, web designers, marketers – half from three streets over, half with a mate in common. The craic’s good. The support’s better.

Networking isn’t just about swapping business cards or hoping some leads pop out of thin air. Here’s what really happens when you show your face locally:

You meet potential clients

Not just shop-front stuff, but proper chats about what folks need help with.

You meet collaborators

Last year, we got the crayons out on a project that needed serious design skills – found the right partner at a Sunderland networking breakfast.

You get the lay of the land

People are honest up here. If someone’s tried a dodgy supplier or knows where to grab the best coffee post-meeting, you’ll hear about it.

Working Together – Not Fighting for Scraps

There’s an old myth that designers, marketers, and agencies are all out to nick each other’s work. Maybe that’s true somewhere else, but up here? Not in our experience. Plenty of projects need more hands. Loads of ideas get better when more brains are around the table.

A few years back, we got pulled into a video job by another agency in Durham. Could’ve seen us as rivals. Instead, we grabbed a brew, figured out the gaps, and realised we could both win. That’s not rare – you’ll see web designers, social media folk, and even copywriters swapping projects or jumping in to help. There’s enough work for everyone. You just need to be seen and heard.

Why It’s Not All Awkward Chit-Chat

Networking does the things your socials and emails can’t:

Turns names into faces

People buy from people, not just logos. If they trust you, you’re halfway there.

Keeps you in the loop

Events in Gateshead or meetups in Sunderland might highlight a market trend before it’s splashed all over LinkedIn.

Finds you resources fast

Need a quick quote, a fresh photographer, or someone who actually knows how Google Ads works? Someone at your next breakfast meet probably does.

Getting the Crayons Out (No, Seriously)

Here’s the fun bit. When you’re chatting to someone new, don’t go in with a pitch. Get the crayons out. Sketch problems. Doodle ideas on napkins if you have to. Most folk remember the person who tried to help, not the person who handed over a glossy flyer. You’ll stand out…and you might learn something that’ll “colour in” the way you work in the future.

Ready to Try It?

You don’t need to hit up every event. But try one local session this month – just to see who’s about and how their story matches yours. Make a point of chatting to somebody you’ve never met.

Recap: If you want to understand how business actually works in the North East, networking beats shouting into the social media void. It builds trust, forges proper working relationships, and helps you find your place in the bigger picture.
