Rare Conditions,
Clear Information.
In 2013 the MPGN/C3G Rare Disease Working Group held the UK’s first patient and family conference for people affected by MPGN, C3 glomerulopathy and related rare kidney conditions. We designed the flyer and built the event website, with the programme, travel details and a booking form.
- WHO — MPGN/C3G Rare Disease Working Group
- WHAT — Flyer Design, Event Website, Booking Form
- WHEN — 2013
- WHERE — International Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne
- HOW — Calm, plain pages that answer the first questions: what is it, who is it for, when, where and how to book
A First Meeting,
For Families.
MPGN and C3 glomerulopathy are rare kidney conditions. The working group planned a free day in Newcastle on Saturday 22 June 2013 where patients and families could hear from experts, ask questions and meet each other. They needed a way to tell people about it and take bookings.
- Free patient and family day
- International Centre for Life, Newcastle
- Talks from UK kidney specialists
- A flyer and a website with booking
Two Pages,
Plain Facts.
We designed an A4 flyer for the conference. The front page opens with a simple question: has someone in your family been diagnosed with one of these conditions? Then it lists the conditions by name, says when, where and what it costs, and sets out the topics and speakers. The back page carries the full timetable and a photo of the venue. We also made a one-page version without the timetable.
- Opens with a question families can answer
- Each condition listed by its full name
- When, where and cost in their own boxes
- Full timetable on the back page
One Page,
Everything Needed.
We built the event website as a single scrolling page at mpgn.org.uk. The menu jumps to each section: About, The Programme, Book, Venue and Travel, and Downloads. Headings use the same classic serif and heavy double rule as the flyer, on a soft grey page, so print and web look like one event.
- One scrolling page with a jump menu
- Same type and rules as the flyer
- Plain wording, no medical jargon in the headings
Who Is Speaking,
And When.
The programme section lists every talk with its time, title and speaker, from how the kidneys work and a beginner’s guide to the immune system, to treatments and how rare diseases are studied. The day ended with a session on forming a UK patient and family support group. A short note explains that lunch is provided and children are welcome, with a break-out room for them.
- Timed programme with each speaker’s role
- Topics written as plain questions
- Note on lunch, children and the break-out room
Getting There,
Made Simple.
Families could be coming from anywhere in the UK. The venue section explains where the Centre for Life is, right next to Newcastle Central Station, with links for public transport and rail journeys. It also lists city-centre hotels and the visitor guide, so people could plan an overnight stay.
- Venue next to Newcastle Central Station
- Links for rail and public transport
- Nearby hotels and visitor information
Book a Place,
Or Ask for a Call.
The booking form asks only for what the organisers needed: name, email, phone, town, how many tickets, and any extra information. People could also tick a box to ask for a phone call instead. Each booking was emailed through as soon as it was sent, and the reply on screen told people when to expect their confirmation email.
- Short booking form
- Option to ask for a phone call
- Bookings emailed through straight away
Talks Shared,
Online.
After the conference a Downloads section went up on the site, so the speakers’ slides on immunology, kidney biopsies and forming a support group were there for families who came and for those who could not make it.
- Downloads section added after the event
- Speakers’ slides shared with families
